Beating Retreat
In 2007, the 75th anniversary of Guid Nychburris, the association pulled out all the stops to create a fitting finale to a week of celebrations. Immediately after the Big Parade, all of the bands congregated in Buccleuch Street for Beating Retreat and it was an instant success, despite the very wet conditions.
Traditionally the ceremony of Beating Retreat was carried out in the regiments of the British Army to mark the end of the working day. It was originally marked with the lowering of the regimental flag while the bugler played the retreat call, this call originally being used to instruct the troops to retreat or withdraw, in a war or battle.
Nowadays, the format of massed bands playing a programme of well known tunes is much more familiar and it is hoped that in 2008, no less than seven and possibly even more bands, will take part in `Beating Retreat`, having just participated in the `Big Parade`.
A list of all the participating bands in 2008 will be published here, nearer to Guid Nychburris week.
